Ron Hulshizer, managing director at Forvis Mazars, and Chuck Herrin, chief technology officer at Wib, recently presented at a cybersecurity panel discussion with Naomi Snyder, the editor-in-chief at Bank Director in Chicago. The panel was part of Bank Director’s Bank Audit and Risk Committees Conference.
The panelists covered a number of issues related to cybersecurity, including threats and risks; areas of emphasis that board members should be asking of their banks; the terminology that comes from IT personnel; and cutting through the technobabble, API (Application Programming Interface) security, and other cyber subjects, including passwords.
One emerging technology is coming from Apple this fall. As reported in the Wall Street Journal the same week as the Bank Director conference, “[new technology] will include a way for users to log into various online accounts without entering passwords or relying on password managers to save and fill in credentials. The technology generates unique passkeys for each app or browser-based service in the place of characters. Those passkeys, a new type of identity authentication, prompt a scan of your face or fingerprints to log you in.”
As discussed during the panel, the implications for banking services that will no longer require typed passwords will include increased security for both users and the banks, as well as increased ease of use for bank clients.
