Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) is a nonprofit, public critical access hospital serving Greensburg, Indiana, and the surrounding rural community. Following an internal review of its revenue cycle function, DCMH engaged Forvis Mazars to support an in-depth assessment of its departmental structure and processes, and then to assist with implementing strategic priorities surfaced in the assessment.
The outcome was measurable improvement in several key areas, including an increase in cash collections and a reduction in claim denial percentage and denial-related revenue loss.
What Were the Hospital’s Biggest Revenue Cycle Challenges?
DCMH leadership identified three primary revenue cycle challenges:
- The impact of new technology implementations
- Organizational and staffing alignment concerns
- A decentralized patient access structure
In working with Forvis Mazars, hospital leaders sought to better understand these challenges and uncover opportunities to help improve performance, increase efficiency, and mitigate risk.
How Did Forvis Mazars Assist With Revenue Cycle Improvement?
Through a detailed data review, industry benchmarking, interviews, and observations of revenue cycle staff and leadership, our team helped DCMH identify three priorities:
- Implementing an organizational alignment strategy
- Standardizing patient access workflows and processes
- Improving accounts receivable management
Based on these priorities, we then helped DCMH establish more effective governance structures, standardized workflows, denial prevention processes, and billing and follow-up operations.
